Great Loop Day 024 Sept 21, 2016, Charlevoix to Leland, Michigan
Charlevoix to Leland. Michigan also known as "the place where canoes run up into the river to land, because they have no harbor"
Leland is built on the site of one of the oldest and largest Ottawa villages on the Leelanau Peninsula. Where the Leland (Carp) River flows into Lake Michigan, there was a natural fish ladder (which was a traditional Native American fishing grounds). The settlement was called Mishi-me-go-bing, meaning "the place where canoes run up into the river to land, because they have no harbor", or alternatively Che-ma-go-bing or Chi-mak-a-ping. Wikipedia

Day 24 Wednesday, Sept 21, 2016. Said goodbye to 3 nights at Charlevoix. Entered a settled lake with small 1- 2ft rollers. Crossed the Great Traverse Bay with nobody in sight. I had left before checking my radar express app on the phone. There were dark clouds to the south and on the radar a huge line of storms crossing Lake Michigan. But lucky for me, not a drop of rain fell on us. The skies would clear out for a while then the clouds returned.
Leaving the Pine River draw bridge to open for the next savvy sailor.
Traveled past Sleeping Bear Dunes National Seashore or so I thought. They don't look so big from a mile offshore. But there are some sand dunes. Checking the charts and I find the Sleeping Beat dunes are further south. These were the Houdek Dunes Natural Area. Still very impressive.
Knew the lake would get soft on the leeward side of Leenanlau Peninsula and that they did. Not a ripple. Not a wave.
Had a full 5-gallon can of gas ready to use but ran all the way to Leland on the main 6-gallon tank with about 5 gallons in it. Filled up 5.86 gallons here at Leland fuel dock. Down to less than a gallon in the main. 36.2 miles today.
Leland is a small native American fishing town. Fishing boats unload their daily catch of white fish and huge lake trout. Mickey's nose perked up when he smelled the fresh fish. Time to relax and check out this town. Fair winds and gentle seas...
The Leland River runs right through Fishtown.
By most standards, Fishtown is not very large but all the real estate is eagerly hogged up both sides of Leland River.
Mickey’s inner leopard is clearly on display as he surveys the marina dock scape.
Comments from 2016:
David Myers There is a few (Fishing boats) down my way, Clearwater used to have one. Now the Sand key bridge and the Causeway bridge are high.
David Myers Let me know when you get close, you stop at Crystal River. That's where they filmed " Follow your Dreams" by Elvis Presley.
Henry Krzemien RN Sure thing Dave. Looking forward to the warm Florida climate in Nov. Keep a light in for me.
Dan Whitmore Glad to hear you had another safe sail. Hope you have many more
Henry Krzemien RN Thanks, Dan, this was a no-bake cheesecake motoring. Look like rain most of the day tomorrow. As long as there is no severe weather threat I'm prepared to power thru it.
Barry Raja LoL rain today you stopping in Manistee ??
Henry Krzemien RN I’ll be in Frankfort. Going to try 65m tomorrow to Pentwater. If I need to bail out I'll sail into Manistee. Have you been there? What's the Pentwater Municipal marina like?
Scott Stanley Sikorski where are you going today?
Henry Krzemien RN Ended up in Leland leaving for Frankfort in the morning.
Scott Stanley Sikorski Watching the weather early this morning and it looked nasty, storms coming across Lake Michigan, glad you were able to continue your journey. We have to get together for dinner ( my treat ) either here in Cleveland or if you make it down to Florida. I will be in Florida in Jan, Feb., and March, really hope you finish your journey. Looking forward to photos every evening.
