South Haven Layover Day 1
“When all seems to be against you, remember, a ship sometimes has to sail against the current, not with it.”

Day 29 Monday, Sept 26, 2016. Layover South Haven. The weather forecast calls for high winds and issued a Small Craft Advisory. Time to lay low and wait it out. Mickey and I could use a rest day. Maybe 2 or 3 more overnight stops before we get to Chicago and then off this lake. Looking forward to tranquil river and canal travel.
Medication fiasco. I have been on prescribed medication for a good number of years for your typical geriatric health issues, hypertension, and diabetes type 2. My health insurance will only pay for 30 days supply. I place a call to my Giant Eagle pharmacy in Cleveland which then puts a call to Walgreens here in South Haven and scripts have to be transferred and then filled.
My cell phone buzzed. Walgreens texted my meds are ready. I biked back up the hill to get there and I find my insurance doesn't cover Walgreens. The cost without insurance is $112. Whoa! Sorry. The Pharm tech was nice enough to give me a list of pharmacies in this area. Tomorrow I'm going to call the health plan for pharmacies that do cover my plan. I overlooked this in my initial planning. Health insurance companies have certain preferred pharmacies they want us pheasants to use. I'm certain it's all about their profits, so wish we could get non-profit insurance companies back again.
What is Mickey looking at so intently?
On the next dock a charter captain was cleaning the lake trout and the smell of fresh fish got Mickey’s notice. The charter captain put out a small piece for Mickey but after a few good sniffs, Mickey wasn’t interested. His taste goes as far as tuna only.
Found a local buffet, Tom's Buffet. 99% Chinese and with bbq ribs. Standard fare and good to taste. Had Chinese vegetable soup, very spicy and hot. Iceberg salad with cheese and cucumbers, diced tomatoes, and dressing. That's all they had available for salad. No complaints however I was the only customer there at 6:45 pm. Half a dozen people coming in for take-out orders. Nothing to remind you you are in a Chinese restaurant. The decor is early 1950s Americana with a table covered in the best Naugahyde tablecloth in Michigan!!! No wonder the Naugas are extinct.
This would have been my go-to place if I lived in the area.
The place was clean and well-lit. I was the only patron this evening.
It wasn’t huge but it had all the right stuff.
The best part was I could go back for more…. and I did!
So the fortune cookie thinks I'll have good things in store in 3 months. Who knows where I'll be in 3 months?
Comments from 2016:
Mary Jo Cartledgehayes Okay, we all need to mark our calendars for three months from now.
Pogo Bob When we read our fortunes, we always add the phrase "in bed". Good luck!
Oh-oh. Something caught my attention on the backstay stainless cable holding up the mast. It’s a double backstay below the stainless triangle so it only takes half the strain. If another strand breaks loose then it will be replaced.
Some of the residents of South Haven turn out on the beach to watch the sunset to mark the end of the day.
