Day 46 Thursday, Oct 13, 2016. Today I reached a milestone. Hit the 1000-mile mark. Finished the day at Tall Timbers Marina in 42.6 for a total of 1019 miles completed.
Today's journey was the complete opposite of yesterday's. The much-needed calm after the storm. Blue skies and still waters. All 5 hours. Even the lock at Peoria didn't require a lock-through. The water was high enough that the wickets used to hold back the river during low water was down according to my phone call to the lock. Just stay on the main channel.
A day to watch the wildlife. No Asian carp to entertain me. Pelicans and great blue herons. If I'm not mistaken the large bird may be an osprey. Pulled into Havana's Tall Timbers Marina, fueled up, and used 3.5 gallons today. Walked to the Dollar General store for supplies. Needed to make 2 trips the second one was for ice. Got in a shower and did a load of clothes. Groceries put away, a quick dinner of Bush baked beans some creamed corn, and freshly thawed frozen broccoli. Life is good. Fair winds and gentle seas.
Saying goodbye to Peoria, Illinois to a colorful morning sky.
Tugs caught sleeping on the shore.
Is that a can or a nun? and what color would it be? Going downriver what side should that be on to be in the safe channel?
Coal-fired power plant.
Red nun ahead, keep it on my left going downriver.
Had to be the shortest tug I have ever seen on the waterway.
Peoria Lock is used when the Illinois River gets low. Fortunately, I was able to float by and stay on the main channel.
White pelican coming in for a shore landing.
Spiders enjoying my boat for food collection web building.
Don’t get too comfortable. Danger lurks around every bend.
Mile markers give us the distance to the Mississippi River.
Some have seen better days.
These navigation day marks correspond to the same color scheme as the floating nav aids. Green Squares on my right and Red Triangles on my left.
My destination for the night. A very narrow channel to get into the cove Tall Timber Marina is located.
Looking at the entrance from inside this little marina.
Tall Timbers Marina has a warm well weathered look to it.
Don’t want to walk up the hill to use the flush toilets? Well, these Porta-johns will do in stylish buildings all their own.
The town of Havana, Illinois once had a cigar factory in the 1880s.
My provisions from the Dollar General store.
Interesting mural where all the sailors like to gather and have a few.
Don’t know who this famous artist was, but they are either in great demand or behind bars.
Time for a Mickey the boat cat picture. Doing what he loves best.
