If you are not still tapped into the AGLCA jungle drums, you may not be aware that Mr. Parks passed away a few months ago. Big loss for a small island. Fortunately we had an opportunity to meet him and stay at his marina last fall and he was still as feisty as ever.

On the same trip over on Smith Island, we tied up to the Tylerton town dock and went to the grocery/restaurant for a crabcake sandwich. As we were placing our order, the cashier/cook/server received a phone call that her father-in-law had not return from the Bay on time and was missing. All the local fishermen immediately hit the water with their boats and after several hours he was unfortunately found deceased on his boat from a heart attack. Apparently he had a pre-existing heart condition and his physician had told him that his next heart attack would be his last so he continued to do what he loved and literally died with his sea boots on.

Very tight knit communities, it seemed that everyone that we talked to over the next few days was related to him, from folks at the cake shop to the curator of cultural center in Ewell.

Thank you for the detailed update. Funny how Milton Parks asked me how old I was. He said if I can live past 66 I should be ok. My late wife Colleen died at 66 a couple years earlier. Here is a list of surnames on the Island that can trace their ancestry back to 1778 I found in an article: Crockett, Pruitt, Parks, Thomas, Dise, Shores, Wheatley and Marshall.

I feel so fortunate to have made his aquaintence however short it was. May his kindness and generosity carry over to the next generation of lslanders.

I found his obituary online and in part:

Milton Chambers Parks, 90

TANGIER ISLAND, Va. - Milton Chambers Parks died Wednesday, May 18, 2022 at Alice Byrd Tawes Nursing Home in Crisfield.

Born on Tangier Island July 29, 1931, he was a son of the late Charles Roland Parks and Annie Kelso Pruitt Parks. His wife of 60 years, Elizabeth Inez "Betty" Bradshaw Parks, preceded him in death April 25, 2012.

Milton was proud to have graduated Valedictorian of his Tangier High School Class. He worked as a waterman/commercial fisherman and had a great love for crab dredging. He was also owner and operator of Parks Marina and enjoyed talking to each and every boater that docked there. In addition, he served several years in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserves.

He was a member of Swain Memorial United Methodist Church and Redmen. He will long be remembered for his down to earth yet funny personality, his generosity, and his kindheartedness.
